Traffic at Terminal 1 of Mexico City International Airport (AICM) was reopened after a blockade led by parents of children with cancer protesting the shortage of medications in Mexico. For more than two hours, traffic was closed on Avenida Capitán Carlos León from the Circuito Interior. The protesters carried banners denouncing the lack of chemotherapy and other medications for cancer patients, thus expressing their frustration at the situation.
The protest took place at gate 2 of the airport, causing some vehicles and Metrobús units to be stranded in the area. The official AICM account reported the reopening of traffic at Terminal 1 and recommended travelers check the status of their flights with the respective airlines.
This demonstration comes shortly after President Claudia Sheinbaum mentioned that it is expected to resolve the medication shortage within two months thanks to a purchasing strategy for the 2025-2026 period. Despite this announcement, protests continue on the streets of Mexico City, with a group of demonstrators marching in the central lanes of Paseo de la Reforma towards La Glorieta del Ahuehuete. The Secretariat of Mexico City has suggested using Circuito Interior and Avenida Chapultepec as alternative routes.
These marches are directed towards the United States embassy in the context of Donald Trump's inauguration, who recently labeled organized crime groups as terrorists, reaffirmed deportation threats against migrants, and maintained the imposition of tariffs.
