Towards Sustainable Mobility in Mexico City

In Mexico City, nearly 90% of fuel used for ground transport comes from fossil fuels, causing significant air pollution. Electric vehicles and bikes could help combat this issue, but infrastructure improvements are necessary.

Towards Sustainable Mobility in Mexico City

In Mexico, approximately 90% of the fuel used in land vehicles comes from fossil fuels, which significantly contributes to air pollution. Are electric transports the solution? Promoting alternatives like electric bicycles and scooters in well-structured cities could make commutes shorter and more sustainable.

In Mexico City, for example, the average commuting distances range from 8 to 10 kilometers. Replacing a traditional car with an electric one can reduce the carbon footprint by up to two tons of CO₂ per year, according to the UN. However, electric and hybrid cars still largely depend on fossil fuels, as the electricity used to charge them often comes from polluting sources.

To achieve sustainable mobility, it is not enough to reduce car usage, but to transform the way we move. Sustainable transport is a key piece in the fight against pollution and climate change. Walking and biking are the most eco-friendly options, but for more people to adopt them, it is necessary to develop more compact and secure cities, mobility experts agreed.

Manuel Suárez Lastra, a researcher at the Geography Institute of UNAM, explained that recent studies show that most people are willing to walk or bike, but within certain limits. From 10 to 20 minutes of walking, which is approximately 800 meters or 8 blocks, and from 15 to 20 minutes biking, that is, between 3 and 5 kilometers.

However, to promote these means of transport, it is essential to have safe infrastructure, adequate parking, and measures to prevent bicycle theft.

Transport is responsible for almost a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations. More compact cities, safe infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, and the promotion of eco-friendly transport are key to reducing pollution and improving quality of life.
