In Mexico City, the installation of a bike lane or a Bus-Bike lane on Eje 8 Sur is proposed, raising questions about road safety. The presence of a Bus-Bike lane in the area has raised concerns due to the potential danger for cyclists from the high speed of buses.
The Mobility Secretariat pointed out that Bus-Bike lanes are not the optimal cycling infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of design and management to ensure the safety of users. Currently, this type of cycling infrastructure covers a considerable extension in the city's road network.
The installation of the bike lane or the Bus-Bike lane is the responsibility of the Secretariat of Works and Services (Sobse), although a date for its implementation has not yet been established. The bike lane on Eje 8 is planned to connect with other important bicycle routes in Mexico City, expanding mobility options for residents.
On the other hand, the Mobility Secretariat indicates that Bus-Bike lanes should be implemented in corridors with low frequency of public transport, which raises doubts about the feasibility of sharing the lane with the expansion of Line 10 of the Trolebus. This new connection is vital as it links regions in the east with areas of high labor activity in the capital.
The Bus-Bike was incorporated into the Traffic Regulations in 2021, as a safe and exclusive shared lane for public transport and non-motorized vehicles. With more than 500 kilometers of bicycle lanes in Mexico City, the installation of a new bike lane on Eje 8 Sur is planned to improve mobility in the area and reduce road incidents caused by the lack of road culture among some drivers.
