The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection issued an alert on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, due to extremely high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in Mexico City. Various protective measures are suggested, such as wearing UV-filtering glasses and a hat, applying sunscreen with SPF 30+, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, staying in the shade or indoors, and particularly protecting children and the elderly.
The entity called on the population to follow these recommendations in order to prevent health damage due to high UV radiation in the capital. Extremely high UV Radiation Indexes have been recorded, exceeding 11 points, which represents a considerable risk to public health. According to the ultraviolet radiation scale, levels between 1 and 5 are considered safe, while level 6 begins to increase risk. At levels above 7 or 8, it is recommended not to be exposed to the sun for more than 15 minutes without adequate protection.
The high radiation in Mexico City is due to the constant presence of winds that carry away clouds, allowing greater penetration of sunlight into the atmosphere. Among the risks of prolonged exposure to UV radiation are skin burns, eye irritation and damage to vision, mucosal conditions, and a higher risk of skin cancer.
The most vulnerable groups to these effects are children and the elderly, which is why the Secretariat of the Environment has recommended taking extra precautions in the city. It is important to follow these recommendations and stay informed to prevent possible health damage.
