Isabel Miranda de Wallace, founder of the civil association Alto al Secuestro, recently passed away, generating a series of condolences from politicians, business people, and activists. Miguel Ángel Mancera and Roberto Gil Zuarth expressed their condolences through social media.
The activist became known for her fight against kidnapping after her son, Hugo Alberto Wallace Miranda, was kidnapped in 2005. Following this incident, Isabel founded Alto al Secuestro to combat this crime and pressure authorities to take stricter measures.
However, her work was also surrounded by controversy following allegations of fabricating evidence for the detention of supposedly innocent people. Despite receiving the National Human Rights Award in 2010, Wallace was subject to criticism from journalists and human rights organizations.
Isabel Miranda de Wallace passed away on Saturday, March 8, at the ABC Hospital in Santa Fe, Mexico City, at the age of 73, after facing complications following surgery. Despite the confirmation of her death, the Attorney General's Office mentioned that no complaint related to her death has been filed and, therefore, no investigation has been initiated.
