A journalist was assaulted during the disturbances that occurred at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City. The reporter, identified as Edgar Contreras from the Reforma newspaper, was attacked with a knife while covering the incidents caused by fights between fans before the match between Club América and Chivas in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
David Faitelson, a recognized analyst from TUDN, expressed his solidarity with Contreras, who had to spend the night in the hospital after suffering a laceration to his ear. Faitelson strongly condemned such violent acts against journalists and called attention to safety in football stadiums.
According to information from Mediotiempo, the journalist was filming a fight between fans when he was attacked. The injury to his ear was considered serious, required sutures, and prompted the immediate transfer of the communicator to a hospital in the south of the Mexican capital for specialized medical attention.
The acts of violence inside and outside the stadium marred the victory of Club América and raised concerns about safety at sporting events. Local authorities have yet to make statements about the incident, which highlights the need to ensure the integrity of media workers during the coverage of sporting events.
