The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (Came) has announced the activation of the environmental contingency due to ozone in the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico, which includes Mexico City and the State of Mexico due to a recorded maximum hourly concentration of ozone. This phase 1 aims to reduce the exposure of the population to polluted air and decrease the generation of pollutants, especially hazardous to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory diseases.
Among the measures to be taken is the restriction on circulation for certain private vehicles with specific holograms and vehicle restrictions to reduce emissions. However, exemptions have been established for electric vehicles, hybrids, emergency transport, and essential services, among others.
Additionally, restrictions have been implemented for industry, services, and transport sectors, with the aim of reducing emissions of ozone precursors. The population is requested to stay informed about air quality and follow health recommendations to protect themselves from pollution, especially by avoiding outdoor activities between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and reducing fuel use at home.
All these measures and recommendations aim to protect the health of the inhabitants of the Valley of Mexico and reduce pollution levels in the region.
