Extreme heat and rain in Mexico City this May 8

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Mexico City will be affected by a heat wave with temperatures reaching 30 degrees and a very hot environment, with partly cloudy skies and increased cloudiness in the afternoon. However, rain and showers are expected in different areas of the capital, according to the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC).

It is forecasted that by 3:00 PM, the temperature will reach its maximum point, hitting 30 degrees in the Venustiano Carranza borough. Subsequently, starting from 6:00 PM, a decrease in temperature is expected with possible rains that could last until 9:00 PM.

During the morning of the same day, scattered clouds are expected, with a cold to cool environment in the higher areas of the State of Mexico and a temperate environment in Mexico City. In the afternoon, a warm to hot environment is predicted, with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and the possibility of rain and showers in the capital. In the State of Mexico, these rains could be accompanied by electrical discharges and hail.

Maximum temperatures in Mexico City will range from 29 to 31 degrees, while minimum temperatures will be between 15 and 17 degrees. Despite the heat, the rains are a consequence of cold front 42 and the start of the rainy season and cyclones in Mexico.

Intense rains are expected in Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, very strong precipitation in Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, and Veracruz, and strong rains in Guanajuato, State of Mexico, and Tlaxcala. Additionally, there will be showers in Chihuahua, Mexico City, Morelos, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, and isolated rains in Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacán, and Quintana Roo.

The heat wave affecting Mexico City since Tuesday, May 6, will continue on Thursday, May 8, with temperatures possibly reaching up to 32 degrees in most of the capital. During these days, clear to partly cloudy skies, high solar radiation, strong gusts of wind, and dust storms are expected.

In light of these conditions, the SGIRPC issued recommendations to protect oneself from the heat in Mexico City, such as avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, remaining in cool and ventilated places, using sunscreen, drinking plenty of water, wearing light clothing, among other measures. The importance of paying special attention to vulnerable groups such as infants, children, and the elderly is highlighted.
