The mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, spoke this Wednesday after the rescue of more than 30 minors from the Casa de las Mercedes shelter, located in the San Rafael area of Mexico City, where cases of abuse and human trafficking are being investigated. In a message posted on her social networks, the official emphasized the importance of not separating the rescued children, as she pointed out that “they were family,” while highlighting the need to preserve their emotional bonds during this difficult time. “It breaks my heart what is happening at Casa de las Mercedes… these girls and children were family to them; any separation is not a procedure, it is breaking ties, it is shattering them into a thousand pieces,” she expressed. Rojo de la Vega explained that after a complaint about possible abuses at the shelter, the municipality conducted administrative verification visits in terms of civil protection and commercial establishments, in order to corroborate the legality and proper operation of the premises. If irregularities are found, the corresponding suspension will be applied to avoid risks. There are many little brothers and sisters who are suffering greatly. In this sense, she assured that the priority during this process will be the comprehensive care of the minors, guaranteeing their emotional security, continuity of affection, and immediate access to psychological care. She also called on the investigating authorities to act with speed, transparency, and justice to determine administrative and criminal liability for those who failed in their duty to protect these girls and children. We will not rest until justice is done and rights are guaranteed. The operation and rescue originated from a complaint of sexual abuse against a minor at the orphanage, whose alleged perpetrator is the founder's son, who has been reported to be facing a judicial process.
