Hospital in Mexico City Re-inaugurates Transplant Unit

Hospital Ángeles Lomas has re-inaugurated its Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Transplant Unit after a major renovation. The event highlighted international standards, clinical achievements, and new logistical support for patients.

Mexico City, Mexico. — Hospital Ángeles Lomas held the re-inauguration of its Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Transplant Unit after a period of remodeling aimed at strengthening the clinical and technological capabilities of its transplant program.

The event featured a panel discussion with Dr. Roberto Ovilla Martínez, Head of the Department of Hematology and Transplants; Dr. Martha Alvarado Ibarra, Hematology and Hematology Fellowship Coordinator; as well as hematologists from this institution and other branches of the hospital system. Dr. Ovilla highlighted that the unit maintains its commitment to FACT-JACIE standards, which are fundamental for the international certification of transplant programs, and to operating a clinical program based on human and quality controls to ensure safety and efficacy.

In contrast, he emphasized that the main clinical challenge lies in allogeneic transplants due to the inherent complications of the procedure and subsequent risks, particularly the incidence of infections and the complexity of immunological management. He also praised the clinical outcomes of autologous transplants, especially for diagnoses like multiple myeloma, where mortality is practically zero both in Mexico and other regions.

Furthermore, the advances of the Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Collection Center were presented, which has been collaborating for two years with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), with over 70 collections performed and frequent shipments to destinations such as Minnesota, Texas, California, Germany, Croatia, and New Zealand, reflecting an uncommon level of international integration for private centers in the country.

The administrative team, consisting of Evelyn Oviedo, Patricia López, and Alfonso Soto, explained the importance of institutional logistics for patient care and transfer, highlighting the agreement with Hotel City Express, which facilitates accommodation for patients and families during the transplant and follow-up process. The renewed infrastructure aims to strengthen international standards in quality and safety.
