Mexico City Issues Alerts Due to Low Temperatures

The Mexico City Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection issued a series of preventive alerts due to the forecast of low temperatures that will affect various boroughs during the early hours of Thursday, January 22. Adverse weather conditions are expected from 00:00 to 08:00 hours, so Civil Protection activated an orange alert for Tlalpan, where low temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees Celsius and frost are anticipated. In this scenario, the government agency urged the population to take extreme precautions; protect children, the elderly, pregnant women, and keep the vaccination scheme against respiratory diseases such as COVID-19, influenza, and pneumococcus up to date. Likewise, the authority recommended the use of moisturizing creams to protect the skin and emphasized that, when using heaters or fireplaces in homes, it is necessary to “maintain adequate ventilation” to prevent incidents from gas inhalation. On the other hand, the Secretariat extended a yellow alert to the Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, La Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, and Xochimilco boroughs, areas where low temperatures of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius are projected. For residents of these areas, the agency suggested preventive measures such as dressing appropriately, covering the nose and mouth, and strictly avoiding sudden temperature changes. The alert also emphasizes health care through the intake of plenty of water, fruits, and vegetables with vitamins A and C, and requests that citizens protect their pets from the cold and avoid leaving them outdoors.
