PAHO: Accelerating Action to Eliminate Cervical Cancer by 2030

The Pan American Health Organization calls for accelerated efforts against cervical cancer in the Americas. Despite vaccination progress, detection and treatment lag, threatening over 46,000 deaths by 2030.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) called for accelerated action to eliminate cervical cancer in the Americas by 2030. While vaccination efforts show progress, detection and treatment remain problematic areas. Projections indicate that if current trends persist, deaths from this disease could exceed 46,200 in the region by 2030. PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa noted that the HPV vaccine is available in 49 of 51 countries and territories in the region, yet screening coverage remains low. To achieve the 2030 targets, 90% vaccination coverage, 70% screening coverage, and 90% treatment coverage are required. PAHO provides technical cooperation to countries in developing national plans and ensures access to vaccines and diagnostic equipment at affordable prices. On February 4, PAHO held a regional seminar to exchange experiences and presented a new planning tool for HPV detection and treatment.
