February and Sexual Health: Mexico Strengthens Prevention

Ahead of Valentine's Day, Mexico is strengthening HIV and STI prevention through a combined approach and digital innovations to protect vulnerable populations.

The management of sexual health and the right to pleasure demand a robust prevention architecture ahead of February festivities. The objective is to enable the population to maximize its sexual well-being by mitigating risks associated with HIV, other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), and unplanned pregnancies, operating within a zero-stigma framework.

In this context, the synergy between civil society, community collectives, and public sector institutions is the cornerstone for achieving these commitments. Organizations such as Inspira Cambio, A.C., emerge as critical facilitators of counseling, advice, and technical support.

The relevance of the season lies in the convergence of significant dates for community health. Malí González, Head of Operations at Inspira Cambio, A.C., underscores that February presents a particular level of personal care activity. In line with this, the National Center for the Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis (CENSIDA) in Mexico has structured its national plans under this vision.

Interventions are based on combination prevention, a model that integrates sex education, rapid detection tests, distribution of supplies like lubricants and condoms, and effective linkage to health systems. This articulation with the public system allows for the free distribution of highly effective prophylactic regimens.
