Mexican Psychiatric Association Prepares for its 60th Anniversary and National Congress

Mexico faces a growing demand for mental health care. The Mexican Psychiatric Association (APM) has announced its XXX National Congress, set for September 2026 in Mexico City. The event will mark the association's 60th anniversary and serve as a platform for scientific discussion and exchange.

In a context marked by the growing demand for mental health care, David Eduardo Saucedo Martínez, president of the Mexican Psychiatric Association (APM), led a coordination meeting along with its Executive Committee, where the progress towards the XXX National Congress of the APM was announced. The event, scheduled for September 2026, will coincide with the association's 60th anniversary and aims to become a strategic platform for scientific updating, clinical debate, and the community projection of psychiatry in Mexico. In an exclusive conversation with LaSalud.mx/Sanamente.mx, David Saucedo Martínez emphasized that assuming the presidency of the APM represents an academic, scientific, and social responsibility not only to preserve the association's historical prestige but also to expand its impact, increase the affiliation of new specialists, and strengthen psychiatry's presence in the community at a critical moment for the country's public health. At six decades since its founding, Saucedo explained, the APM has managed to transform the social perception of the psychiatrist, moving from a stigmatized view to a clearer recognition of its role in comprehensive health care. Additionally, significant space will be given to residents, young psychiatrists, and established professionals to strengthen mentoring, intergenerational cohesion, and community building within the APM. Finally, Saucedo reiterated that psychiatry is not just for psychiatrists but a transversal discipline for the entire health system. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary, the APM seeks for the commemoration to transcend the symbolic and translate into sustained dissemination, education, and social participation actions, with an active presence in scientific, legislative, and community scenarios.
