Epilepsy Surgery in Mexico: Study Confirms Therapeutic Effectiveness

A Mexican study shows that surgical intervention significantly improves epilepsy control and reduces the burden on the healthcare system, offering a new path for treating patients who do not respond to medication.

A study conducted at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery 'Manuel Velasco Suárez' (INNN) has confirmed that epilepsy surgery is an effective therapeutic alternative for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. The analysis of clinical outcomes and costs demonstrated significant improvements in seizure control and a reduction in the use of health services. Following the surgical intervention, 25% of patients achieved complete freedom from convulsive seizures, while the remaining 75% showed a significant decrease in the frequency of episodes, dropping from up to 30 monthly crises to an average of two. This led to a reduction in hospitalizations from four to five days before surgery to less than one day post-procedure. The specialist emphasized that ensuring timely access to diagnosis, pharmacological treatment, and alternatives such as surgery is fundamental for improving health outcomes. The findings highlight the need to expand coverage and access to these procedures as part of a comprehensive strategy for neurological care in Mexico.
