The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) issued recommendations to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning during the low temperature season in Mexico City. People should use heaters in ventilated areas and turn them off before leaving or sleeping. It is also advised to protect pets from the cold by keeping them in enclosed spaces and avoiding frequent baths.
To prevent frostbite on feet, it is recommended to wear closed footwear and carry waterproof or windbreaker clothing. The SGIRPC urges to avoid the use of charcoal grills or braziers in enclosed spaces and suggests using cream to protect and hydrate the skin. It is important to maintain good hygiene, wash hands frequently, and visit a health center in case of discomfort.
To cope with anticipated frosts in high areas of Mexico City, the population is advised to avoid travel on visibly icy roads and to drive with extreme caution as streets may become slippery. Temperatures are expected to range between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius in the early hours of Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
In light of this forecast, the SGIRPC recommends dressing in at least three layers of clothing, preferably cotton or wool, and covering the nose and mouth. A yellow alert has been activated in Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, and Tlalpan due to the predicted low temperatures.
