Precautions Due to Volcanic Ash from Popocatépetl

Authorities advise residents of Mexico City to avoid outdoor activities and take precautions against volcanic ash fallout. Stay clear of the exclusion zone around the Popocatépetl volcano and ensure the safety of pets and household items.

Precautions Due to Volcanic Ash from Popocatépetl

The Popocatépetl volcano continues to be monitored due to recent activity, which could result in ashfall in various areas of Mexico City, according to information from the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) of the capital.

In response to the presence of volcanic ash, the National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) issued recommendations for the population in case of exposure to this material. It is advised to avoid outdoor activities and protect the respiratory pathways as much as possible.

In the most recent monitoring report of the volcano, an emission of water vapor with a mild to moderate amount of volcanic ash was identified. It is expected that this ash will move in the northwest direction, affecting the 16 boroughs of Mexico City.

During the last 24 hours, Cenapred recorded 22 exhalations accompanied by a thousand seven minutes of volcanic tremor. Despite this activity, the Volcanic Alert Light remains at YELLOW PHASE 2, indicating a moderate level of risk.

Given the current situation, authorities are urging the population not to approach the Popocatépetl volcano, as explosions that expel incandescent fragments could occur. Additionally, it is recommended to cover electrical devices and equipment, as well as vehicles, to prevent damage from the presence of ash.

In case of having pets, it is important to supervise that the water and food they consume are not contaminated. It is also advised to seal the openings of houses with wet cloths to limit the entry of ash and to avoid going outdoors, especially in the vicinity of the volcano. In situations of heavy rain, it is recommended to stay away from low-lying areas due to the risk of mud and debris flows. It is essential to follow these instructions to safeguard the safety and health of the population.
