The Mexican government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum since October 1, has achieved the detention of 3,015 high-profile criminals and the seizure of 390,740 fentanyl pills. These actions are part of an operation that has secured a total of 42 tons of drugs in Mexico. Among the confiscated substances are also an additional 14 kilograms of fentanyl, 22 kilos of heroin, more than 8,500 kilograms of marijuana, 20.075 kilos of cocaine, and 13.373 kilos of methamphetamines.
In a morning conference, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, mentioned the positive impact of these actions by highlighting that "they represent millions of doses that will not reach the streets and will not affect the health and development of thousands of young people." These achievements are particularly relevant given the pressure from the United States to control the trafficking of fentanyl from Mexico, a topic that has gained importance following Donald Trump's electoral triumph.
Among the successful operations, there has been reported the destruction of 15 clandestine synthetic drug laboratories in the states of Baja California and Sinaloa, where authorities confiscated large amounts of chemical substances, cocaine, and fentanyl. According to García Harfuch, these actions have dealt a blow of 5.857 billion pesos (292.85 million dollars) to criminal organizations by depriving them of the capacity to produce and sell these drugs.
Additionally, the detention of an alleged drug trafficker in Tijuana was highlighted, who was transporting 36 kilograms of fentanyl pills valued at 130 million pesos (6.5 million dollars). These cases demonstrate the Mexican government's commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and violence in the country, as mentioned by official García Harfuch, who emphasized that these actions aim to promote peace and security across the national territory.
Among the high-profile arrests, the capture of Zhi Dong, a Chinese citizen with an extradition order to the United States for crimes related to international cocaine trafficking, and the apprehension of Itania Noemí, an alleged operator of a criminal cell of the Sinaloa Cartel and considered a major generator of violence in the state of Colima, stand out. These cases are just a sample of the ongoing fight that Mexican authorities are carrying out against organized crime and its drug trafficking networks.
