Clashes Erupt in Mexico City Over Street Vendors

The government of Mexico City reported that during a tour to remove unauthorized semi-fixed stalls around Alameda Central, there were aggressions by a group of merchants. Six people were injured in the incident: two for eye irritation and four for physical aggression. Three merchants were arrested and presented to the Civic Judge by personnel of the Auxiliary Police of the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC).

Subsequently, a group of merchants blocked the intersection of Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas and Avenida Juárez. The Political Coordination staff is in dialogue with the protesters to reach agreements that allow the release of traffic. In a statement, the government recalled that in December last year an agreement had been established with merchants to keep the Bellas Artes area free of street vending and allow only organized activities within Alameda Central.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and joint work to preserve order and safety for the benefit of the population.

In a video shared on social media, a confrontation between police from Mexico City and merchants in Alameda Central is shown.
