The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated that the United States will impose tariffs against Mexico starting February 1. The energy reform, along with its secondary laws, includes the Hydrocarbons Law, which will strengthen Pemex by giving it preference in the selection of allocations and the possibility of having mixed contracts. In addition, a historical level of cooperation in border security between the two countries is expected.
In a conference, Sheinbaum mentioned that she does not believe these tariffs will occur and that, if they do, they already have a plan in place. The president also reacted to Google Maps' renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America," announcing the sending of a letter to Google to request the restoration of its original name.
In the energy sector, it is highlighted that the reform includes the return of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Pemex to the people of Mexico. Furthermore, it is expected to promote the petrochemical and fertilizer industry, facilitate investments in clean energy, and establish a new simplified tax regime to enhance wellbeing.
The Secretary of Energy, Luz Elena González, explained that the energy reform includes the elimination of subsidiaries in Pemex and CFE, with the goal of integrating them into a single company to improve efficiency and contribute to public finances. This legislative package includes six main laws and the harmonization of five others, addressing strategic areas such as energy transition, private sector participation, and planning in the electricity sector.
President Sheinbaum will announce the presentation of the secondary laws of the energy reform to Congress to fulfill the Mexico Plan.
