UNAM Expands High School Education by 1,500 Places

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) announced an expansion of its high school program, adding 1,500 new spots to support education in the country. This initiative aligns with the government's efforts to enhance educational access for students.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) announced its commitment to higher secondary education in Mexico by increasing its educational offerings in high school by 1,500 places for the 2025-2026 school year. This increase is part of the initiative of the President of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum, to strengthen secondary education in the country.

UNAM's rector, Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, emphasized that this expansion involves the support of the nine campuses of the National Preparatory School and the five of the College of Sciences and Humanities, which will allow for the education of nearly 34,000 students. During the Ratification of Adhesion to the Academic Council for the Transformation of Technological and Higher Professional Education, Lomelí Vanegas affirmed the institution's commitment to educational excellence.

Furthermore, UNAM and the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) will conduct a unique online exam to facilitate the admission process for students to their higher secondary education campuses. This measure aims to ensure that more young people have access to education.

In his speech, the rector reiterated the National University's support for the defense of the country's sovereignty and the rights of Mexican migrants, backing the government's initiatives in this regard. During the previous school year, UNAM offered 31,000 places in high school, enrolling just over 33,000 students, reflecting its impact on the quality of life of thousands of families with nearly 380,000 students in total.

Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas highlighted the importance of ensuring no young person is left without access to higher secondary education due to a lack of space, emphasizing that universal and inclusive education is a fundamental commitment to the country and future generations. The event was attended by authorities such as the Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado Carrillo, and the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada Molina, who support efforts to consolidate a more equitable and fair education system.
