Tensions Rise Over Bullfighting Ban in Mexico City

Recent weeks have seen rising tensions in Mexico City regarding a citizen initiative to ban bullfighting. The official majority is divided, complicating legislative activities.

Tensions in the Congress of Mexico City have been rising in recent weeks due to a citizen initiative that aims to ban bullfighting, which has captured the main attention, relegating other issues on the legislative agenda to the background. Sandra Cuevas has announced the call for candidacies, thus accelerating her mobilization.

In this atmosphere of uncertainty, there is still no certainty regarding the future of the aforementioned initiative, which has created difficulties for the progress of other pending legislative proposals, such as certain appointments in the Legislative Power of the capital. The ruling majority in the Palacio de Donceles is divided between supporting the ban on bullfighting and seeking reforms to regulate it, with conflicting positions such as that of Deputy Pedro Haces Lago.

Tensions recently intensified in Congress when Haces Lago accused a deputy from PAN of trying to extort him to sabotage the initiative and maintain bullfighting in the Benito Juárez municipality. The uncertainty about possible outcomes keeps both factions in suspense, while the legislative agenda is postponed due to this divisive issue.

Amid accusations and complaints, a struggle of interests is evident where negotiations present a challenge. Although no close resolution is in sight, both the ruling party and the opposition prioritize finding a middle ground that satisfies both sides. This dispute has left other pending matters on the legislative agenda of CDMX on hold, generating an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension in Congress.

The start of a new session period in the capital congress is marked by the debate over bullfighting, a topic that has been lingering since last year and, for now, shows no signs of being resolved in the short term.
