Local PAN deputy, Olivia Garza, has proposed a request to the Head of Government Clara Brugada and the Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi) to complete, no later than December 31 of this year, the process of scrapping minibuses in Mexico City. In the capital congress, Garza recalled that the replacement of these vehicles is a pending task of the current administration, which the previous president, Claudia Sheinbaum, failed to fulfill.
"In March 2023, the current President was pleased to promise that, at the latest by 2024, all minibuses would be scrapped and replaced with safe transportation. She said that to fulfill her commitment, 1.8 billion pesos would be allocated: the money has run out, but the minibuses have not," said Olivia Garza. Currently, around 2,000 minibuses still circulate in Mexico City, many of which are over 25 years old and do not guarantee safe, efficient, or sustainable transportation.
The legislator acknowledged Clara Brugada's intention earlier this year to address the debt left by her predecessor on this matter. However, she believes that citizens need firm commitments instead of more unfulfilled promises. Garza emphasized: "People do not live on promises, which is why we are proposing to urge the Head of Government to complete the replacement of minibuses this year." It is crucial to avoid extensions and fulfill the commitments made in order to improve transportation in Mexico City.
