New ECOEMS Process for High School Enrollment in Mexico City

In 2024, most students in Mexico City will be able to enroll in high school without an entrance exam. Changes in the ECOEMS process are expected to improve educational access.

New ECOEMS Process for High School Enrollment in Mexico City

In 2024, according to official data from COMIPEMS, the vast majority of applicants had no problems enrolling in any option for Upper Secondary Education. In fact, 95 out of every 100 students were able to continue studying without difficulties. Almost 60% of the applicants selected a UNAM high school as their first option.

The ECOEMS process, previously known as COMIPEMS, has introduced significant changes. It will now be called Space for Coordination of Upper Secondary Education, and it has been confirmed that most educational options will not require a direct entrance exam. However, for UNAM and IPN high schools, a unique exam will be necessary.

The call for the 2025-2026 school year in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City has raised some questions, especially regarding accessibility to the online exam, as a computer and internet will be required. Despite the advancements, concerns remain about how to improve admission mechanisms to ensure quality education for all students.

Less than 5% of applicants had difficulties in the past process, mainly due to not showing up for the exam or irregularities in their registrations. The exam will consist of 128 items, and the minimum correct answer requirements for UNAM and IPN options will remain.

Although some contradictions regarding the exam application process persist, it has been clarified that there will be a fee only for those taking the test. For high-demand schools, the assignment of places will be carried out by lottery, at no additional cost to the applicants.

Official platforms emphasize the transition towards a model of total inclusion in upper secondary education, moving away from the exclusion that characterized the previous process.
