The government of Mexico City is preparing an initiative to regulate the circulation of electric bicycles and scooters in the bike lanes of the capital. Morena deputy, Brenda Ruiz, announced that the head of the Government, Clara Brugada, will soon send this proposal to the local Congress, which aims to organize the traffic of these vehicles.
Ruiz explained that the intention is not to ban electric bicycles and scooters, but to regulate their use, as they currently circulate uncontrolled in the bike lanes intended for cyclists. It is anticipated that the initiative will include the creation of a registry of merchants of electric propulsion vehicles, in order to ensure compliance with the corresponding regulations.
The traffic regulations will apply equally to electric bicycles, scooters, and other motorized vehicles. The deputy urged that traffic rules be respected to prevent accidents and protect the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. It is expected that once the initiative is presented, it will be approved for the benefit of road safety in Mexico City.
