Claudia Sheinbaum Defends Anti-Nepotism Reform

In her role as Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum has passionately defended her personal initiative against nepotism. Despite challenges from senators, her proposed reform aims to prohibit family succession in political positions starting in 2025. This move is seen as a strategic maneuver to unite her party and curb internal conflicts over power succession.

Claudia Sheinbaum Defends Anti-Nepotism Reform

Claudia Sheinbaum has been in the presidency of Mexico for nearly five months, and for the first time, we can see her passionately and convincingly defend her own initiative, as if it were to defend a child. This particular initiative is a reform against nepotism. The announcement of this initiative came after Sheinbaum spoke about the reform of the judiciary and mentioned the privileges of the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.

However, the senators have been clever in approving Sheinbaum's initiative, on the condition that it takes effect in 2030, which could allow the members of Morena to exercise power regardless of whether it involves nepotism. For example, in Guerrero, where the governorship will be renewed in 2027, Félix Salgado Macedonio has expressed his desire to succeed his own daughter, Evelyn Salgado.

In Mexico City, Mauricio Tabe, mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, has been considered the best-rated public official during the month of February. Sheinbaum is aware that the members of her party faithfully follow the guidelines of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which sometimes leads them to ignore the president's initiatives, challenging her authority.

Sheinbaum and Luisa María Alcalde, leader of Morena, have joined forces to prevent relatives from running for elections starting in 2025, challenging the intentions of the senators to postpone the initiative until 2030. This move has also slowed the actions of Andrés López Beltrán, son of López Obrador, who has shown an increasing prominence in the party.

Facing the tension between her political approach and López Obrador's interests, Sheinbaum has decided to immediately apply the party statutes that prohibit nepotism in elections starting in 2025. In the face of resistance and internal protests within Morena, the approval of the anti-nepotism reform by the party's legislature has been a significant step in the current political situation.

Sheinbaum's initiative, although originally aimed at the judiciary, has had a significant impact on the Morena party, challenging entrenched practices of nepotism in Mexican politics. This decision has generated debates and internal tensions within the party, demonstrating Sheinbaum's determination despite the criticisms and opposition she has faced.
