Former President Vicente Fox urged the government led by Claudia Sheinbaum to reconsider its strategy regarding the 25 percent tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. He suggested that instead of organizing a massive rally in the Zócalo of Mexico City, they should coordinate efforts with business leaders. Fox emphasized the importance of a joint strategy involving economic, business, labor, and agricultural sectors to face this crisis.
Amid the musical piece "The Dance of the Knights" from the ballet Romeo and Juliet, Fox stressed the need for unity among sectors with economic power, leadership, and the ability to rally. He dismissed the idea of an informational rally in the Zócalo proposed by Sheinbaum, arguing that true strength lies in the unity between businesspeople and labor leaders to counter Trump's tariffs.
The former president mentioned that, while this is not a "fight blow by blow," it is important to approach this issue as a "war" where each strategic confrontation can be won. He emphasized that Mexico can emerge victorious from this situation, comparing it to World War II. Fox also highlighted that the government should not act unilaterally or resort to populism through public events.
On the other hand, President Sheinbaum plans to present the government's plan to address the tariffs in the Zócalo of Mexico City on Sunday, March 9. As for the tariffs, they have already come into effect, although an agreement is expected to be reached on Wednesday, March 5, to prevent the rates from continuing. This agreement is expected to focus on increasing efforts against immigration and fentanyl trafficking, which could mean that the tariffs will not be generalized in the coming days.
In this context, Fox highlighted the importance of joining forces with other key actors at the global economic level and designing solid strategies in collaboration with academia and Mexican thinkers to emerge victorious in this situation.
