Mexico City Considers Regulation Suspension for 2026 World Cup

Mexico City is considering the possibility of suspending the regulation of digital lodging platforms, such as Airbnb and Expedia, during the celebration of the 2026 World Cup. This measure would exempt properties from the restriction that prohibits renting for more than 50% of the nights in a year, specifically during the tournament period in the Mexican capital, which will host five matches at the Azteca Stadium, including the opening match.

Xóchitl Bravo, coordinator of the Morena Caucus, announced that an initiative will be studied to temporarily suspend the reforms to the Tourism Law, the Housing Law, and the Reconstruction Law of Mexico City, approved on October 3, 2024, which regulate platforms such as Airbnb. It aims to establish controls prior to the arrival of the 2026 World Cup to ensure a positive experience for tourists and residents, without harming property owners.

The proposal raises questions about the city's accommodation capacity and highlights that traditional hotels may not meet all the lodging demand. Mexico City has more than 61,000 rooms in legally established hotels and motels, but adequate regulation for platforms such as Airbnb is sought.

Xóchitl Bravo emphasized the importance of ensuring safety and the rights of those who use Airbnb, particularly with the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Clara Brugada, head of government, anticipates that Mexico City expects to receive around 5 million visitors during the tournament. Additionally, it is noted that there are about 19,000 registered properties just on Airbnb, along with others through platforms like Booking, Vrbo, and Expedia, totaling approximately 40,000 available properties.

The discussion surrounding the regulation of lodging platforms is considered a priority issue that goes beyond the World Cup, focusing on resolving fundamental matters for the safety and comfort of tourists and residents of Mexico City.
