Deputy Martha Soledad Ávila Ventura, President of the Board of Directors of the Congress of Mexico City, was notified by the Judicial Power to comply with the corresponding legal procedures regarding the resolution on the prohibition of bullfighting in CDMX.
The deputy of Movimiento Ciudadano, Royfid Torres, announced that protests would take place due to the more than 27 thousand signatures presented by animal rights activists in Mexico City. It is expected that at noon, animal rights activists and deputies will close the Congress of CDMX to pressure legislators regarding the prohibition of bullfighting.
Jesús Sesma, coordinator of the parliamentary group of the Green Party in the CDMX Congress, urged deputies to define their stance on the citizen initiative to prohibit animal shows, including bullfighting. He criticized the lack of consistency among the majority of legislators who claim to be animal advocates but do not show determination when voting on this issue.
The Judicial Power of Mexico City rejected halting the initiative to prohibit bullfighting, arguing that the Constitutional Court lacks the legal authority to proceed with the appeal filed by Alberto Vanegas. It is highlighted that the Congress of Mexico City has a deadline of March 11 to discuss and vote on the bill that prohibits these practices, a situation that some Morena deputies have attempted to delay due to their ties to bullfighting.
Therefore, the Congress of Mexico City will be able to examine and present the citizen initiative to the plenary for voting, and it is expected that the Constitutional Points Commission will meet to approve it before an extraordinary session in the plenary. The resolution of the Judicial Power has paved the way for discussing this important issue for animal activists in the capital.
