Initiative to Prohibit Bullfighting in Mexico City

The Political Coordination Board of the Congress of Mexico City (Jucopo) is working on the preparation of a report that will be discussed in the Commission of Constitutional Points and Citizen Initiatives regarding a preferred citizen initiative for the prohibition of public and private shows with animals, including bullfighting, novice fights, calf fights, mounted bullfighting, tests, and cockfights.

At a press conference, the president of the Jucopo, Jesús Sesma, unanimously announced that it has been agreed to work on this working group, which will be led by legislator Daniela Álvarez Camacho, president of the mentioned commission, with the aim of creating the report that will be presented to the plenary on March 18.

Sesma noted that cockfighting has a different legal figure than bullfighting, indicating that a public consultation will be required to address that issue, hence it will not be included in this legislation.

The coordinator of Morena, Xóchitl Bravo, reported that a report is being collectively prepared, which will be presented to the Commission of Constitutional Points and Citizen Initiatives and, subsequently, to the plenary. For his part, the PAN member Diego Garrido stated that through dialogue between the various political forces, consensus can be reached. He emphasized that the issue of "bloodless bulls" has been addressed in other legislatures and is a position that his party has supported for years.
