The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced the prohibition of bullfighting with violence through the creation of the legal figure 'violent-free bullfighting'. This measure aims to prevent bulls from being killed and tortured by the matadors in Plaza México.
At a press conference, the leader supported the proposal of President Claudia Sheinbaum and bullfighting deputy Pedro Haces Lago, who advocated for the permanence of bullfighting without causing harm to the animal. Clara Brugada stated that the intention is to transform these practices rather than eliminate them.
In line with constitutional principles and addressing the will of the majority of the capital's inhabitants, the Government of Mexico City will promote a proposal based on the following principles. Bullfighting with violence is prohibited, and the figure of 'violent-free bullfighting' is established, allowing bullfighting to continue under new rules.
Within this new approach, the death of the bull is prohibited both inside and outside the ring, and it is established that once the show is over, the bull must return to its ranch. The physical integrity of the animal is protected, and mistreatment is prohibited inside and outside the show. The use of sharp objects that can injure or kill the bull, such as barbs, swords, or spears, is forbidden, allowing only the use of the cape and the muleta. Additionally, the bull's horns are protected, and the duration of the fight is limited to 10 minutes per bull, with a maximum of 30 minutes.
