Ronald Johnson Defends His Nomination as Ambassador

The future United States ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, appeared before the Senate of his country to defend his nomination. He anticipated that his focus will be on coordination and bilateral work with Mexican authorities, highlighting that in matters of security and the fight against organized crime, "all cards are on the table."

During his testimony, Johnson emphasized his commitment to addressing issues that directly affect American citizens and mentioned that in situations of risk for them, he will consider all available options. He expressed his interest in collaborating with Mexican partners and stressed the importance of strengthening security against cartels.

The former ambassador to El Salvador praised the relationship between Claudia Sheinbaum and Donald Trump, describing it as positive. He asserted that the U.S. president takes the protection of citizens of the country seriously. Johnson adopted a firm tone when addressing issues such as the reluctance of some cartel members to abandon their territories.

Going forward, the ambassador will face significant challenges in his management. In addition to the fight against organized crime and migration in Latin America, economic negotiations, the renegotiation of the USMCA, and collaboration for the 2026 World Cup will be priorities on the bilateral agenda.

Sheinbaum's stance in seeking to reduce tensions between the two countries has contributed to postponing the tariffs announced by the United States against Mexican products. Johnson emphasized his commitment to national security and border protection against illegal drugs and immigration.
