President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for Clara Brugada's proposal, head of Government, regarding the celebration of bullfights without violence in Mexico City. Brugada proposed this initiative to preserve the jobs of those who work in this spectacle, which has been suspended since 2024, and to introduce measures to protect the bulls during the festivities.
In a press conference, Sheinbaum backed the initiative and highlighted the importance of maintaining jobs linked to bullfighting while simultaneously respecting the animal protection established in the Constitution. The president stated that Brugada's proposal is a viable solution that has been successfully implemented in other countries facing similar dilemmas.
Pointing to the precedent of Spain, where bullfighting is considered cultural heritage but has been banned in some cities like Barcelona, Sheinbaum urged Brugada to negotiate to find a balance that respects both the bullfighting tradition and animal protection.
For her part, Clara Brugada detailed her proposal, which seeks to prohibit bullfighting with violence and create a new model of bullfighting entertainment free from abuse. Among the announced measures are limits on the duration of the fights and the prohibition of the death of bulls inside and outside the venue, as well as the safe return of the animals to their farms after the event.
Brugada emphasized that this initiative responds to the demand of a majority of citizens and will position Mexico City as a leader in animal protection. Based on the recognition of animals as "sentient beings" in the local Constitution, the head of Government stressed the ethical and legal responsibility to respect the life and integrity of animals, ruling out the possibility of allowing shows where they are mistreated.
