Approval of Bullfighting Law Without Violence in Mexico City

The Congress of Mexico City approved by a wide majority the initiative presented by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, to prohibit bullfights where there is violence against animals, with the aim of preventing suffering and death. The initiative received 61 votes in favor and only one against, which was from the well-known bullfighting supporter, Pedro Haces Lago.

Pedro Haces Lago, a deputy born in Tlalpan and son of the prominent bullfighting entrepreneur Pedro Haces, presented some reservations to the ruling that were not approved. Despite this, both the ruling party and the opposition voted in favor, unlocking a situation that had previously seemed stagnant.

In a press conference, the coordinator of the Morena parliamentary group, Xóchitl Bravo, mentioned that there were certain pressures in recent days, but highlighted the agreements reached that allowed the approval of the initiative. This law is expected to be presented in other states of Mexico to advance at the federal level.

The coordinator of the Green Party, Jesús Sesma, applauded the approval of the initiative, calling it the beginning of the end of bullfighting and animal abuse. Authorities now have 210 days to implement the new provisions, seeking to uphold the rights of sentient beings that have no voice.

Pedro Haces Lago, expressing his opposition to the initiative, declared his commitment to continue fighting for a fair and efficient modernization, claiming that culture is understood, identity transforms, and art is respected. The approval of the prohibition of bullfights with violence is considered another step towards a City that respects animal rights and advances in its transformation.
