The missing works of the Mexico-AIFA train will be completed by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena). The company Ferrocarriles Suburbanos assured that it will continue providing service on the Buenavista-Cuautitlán stretch normally to guarantee users a safe and reliable journey.
In a press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum explained that due to delays in the construction of the train, the government decided that the military would be in charge of finalizing the work. The Mexico-AIFA train, which will connect Mexico City with the Santa Lucía airport, was divided into two sections for its construction.
While military engineers constructed part of the tracks and the terminal station within the airport’s perimeter, the concessionaire company CAF was responsible for the second stretch from Buenavista to Lechería, where the train will circulate. However, this second stretch faced difficulties and did not progress as planned.
The train's opening was initially estimated for September 2023, but that date was not met. The new operational start date is scheduled for July, but the work has not progressed as expected. Ferrocarriles Suburbanos declined the concession to operate the train, leaving the service without an operator.
The government announced in the Official Federal Gazette that the concessionaire company will not be responsible for the train's operation. It was reported that the Army consulted with the managers of the Maya Train to be able to operate the train to AIFA and it is expected to be the operator of the railway concession.
