The Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City has responded to citizens' questions about the use of license plate holders in the capital, a topic that has generated controversy due to new fines for inappropriate use. Through an infographic, the allowed and not allowed points are highlighted according to the Traffic Regulations of Mexico City to avoid violations.
According to Article 45 paragraph I, section b of the Regulations, all plates must be visible and without obstructions that hinder their reading. It is the user's responsibility to ensure that the plate meets these characteristics so that the vehicle is identifiable on the street.
In the words of the Secretariat of Citizen Security: "The correct use of the license plate holder not only avoids fines but also contributes to safety on the streets of the city. Together we can make Mexico City a safer and more orderly place".
Regarding what is allowed, the Regulations state that the plates must be in visible places, both front and back, without alterations. Additionally, the license plate holder can be made of any material, as long as it does not obstruct the reading of the data on the plate.
On the other hand, actions that should not be taken are highlighted, such as modifying the plate with tints, films, or other elements that cover or change its appearance. Avoiding the use of unauthorized protectors that may reflect light or impede proper visualization of the plate is also essential.
In the event that the plate or the license plate holder does not meet the required characteristics and, on the contrary, respects the established requirements, traffic agents cannot sanction, fine, or remove the plate from the vehicle.
