Mexico City Mayor Accused of Using Public Funds to Promote Wife

A political scandal has erupted in Mexico City over the alleged use of public funds for electoral purposes. Deputies from the MORENA party, Cecilia Vadillo and Víctor Hugo Romo, have accused the mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, Mauricio Tabe of the PAN party, of abuse of power and nepotism. They claim Tabe is using his position to promote his wife's candidacy, Laura Álvarez, who is also a PAN deputy. Vadillo stated that there is a "systematic scheme" within the mayor's office in favor of Álvarez. Romo specified that at least three million pesos have already been spent on her promotion, exceeding the legal spending limit for local campaigns. These accusations are part of a broader political struggle: the opposition (PAN) aims to hold onto this key district, while the ruling MORENA party is preparing for the 2027 elections, seeking to win back as many mayoralties as possible. "We are facing a case of conflict of interest, misappropriation of resources, and the use of government machinery," Vadillo concluded.
