The national leadership of MORENA installed a National Consultative Council last Friday, an original proposal by Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented in January 2011. It is a body that will oversee the decision-making of the leadership, as well as for the party's militants and officials from the country's most important opposition workers' party. At the meeting at the Polyforum Siqueiros in Mexico City, a total of 76 people attended; among them, historical left-wing militants such as Epigmenio Ibarra and Armando Bartra, and pro-AMLO writers like Elena Poniatowska and Paco Ignacio Taibo II. Also accompanying the MORENA leadership were family members of President Luisa María Alcalde: her mother Bertha Luján Uranga and her father Arturo Alcalde Justiniani. In addition to federal officials in office, such as Alejandro Encinas, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, José Alfonso Suárez del Real, Secretary Citlalli Hernández, and Elvira Concheiro. The aforementioned individuals and the other 76 MORENA national consultants, for the most part, have held command positions since the party's foundation and are close to various organizations against what AMLOism called 'the neoliberal regime'. This is why the attendance of businesswoman Patti Armendáriz drew attention. She clarified that it was the former president who invited the Chiapas native to his movement. Despite this, the Chiapas businesswoman presents herself as a defender of the people. Armendáriz Guerra's participation directly links her to the model that promoted the financial bailout of bankers, at least that was the topic of rumors at the Polyforum Siqueiros. That institution was key in the supervision of the banks that were later bailed out through FOBAPROA. Andy reappeared in Coahuila and is in charge of organizing the local elections for 2026. FOBAPROA was widely criticized by AMLO himself, a topic to which he dedicated more than one book. 'The inconsistency is evident: he helped justify the largest transfer of private debt to the nation, but today he seeks to capitalize on a movement that was born precisely to break with those practices.' In response, President Alcalde reminded her inner circle of López Obrador's own words: 'MORENA is an open, plural, and inclusive space; that is where its richness lies.' In addition to Patricia Armendáriz, Miguel Torruco Marqués, another controversial businessman who came to the 4T through AMLO, was also at the Polyforum. Historical AMLO supporters responded that they do not oppose the participation of Patti Armendáriz and Miguel Torruco Marqués as sympathizers, but they insist on questioning their participation in the Council that will guide the conduct of MORENA members, a place where people with a questionable past should not be. 'The Purists' as gatekeepers. 'She was part of the decisions that led to the historic debt that Mexicans still pay,' one of the participants at the table revealed to LPO. The federal deputy from MORENA held the vice-presidency of the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) during the 1994-1995 banking crisis.
MORENA Establishes National Consultative Council in Mexico City
MORENA's national leadership established a new consultative body led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The council includes 76 members, such as historical left-wing figures and current officials. However, the involvement of controversial business figures has drawn criticism from 'purist' party loyalists.
