Teachers Protest Outside the National Palace

Teachers from the CNTE are protesting outside the National Palace in Mexico City, demanding the reinstatement of dialogue with the government. President Claudia Sheinbaum deemed the protest incomprehensible, stating that permanent dialogue tables already exist. Clashes between protesters and police continue.

Due to Sheinbaum's lack of response, they moved their protest to the Congress of the Union. It is also worth noting that the teachers' protest has also been questioned by opposition groups, who suggest they are being used by the government itself to sabotage the Generation Z protest, a thesis that emerged during Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government in the context of other protests. Amid these controversies, Sheinbaum was questioned about the climate of criticism that has erupted against her management in the last month. In this regard, she stated: 'López Obrador said that no president had ever received the offensive that was made against him, and I believe we are heading in that direction if we haven't already won.' This occurs on the eve of the so-called Generation Z march, to which President Claudia Sheinbaum dedicated time in her morning press conference to question the background of both demonstrations. Sheinbaum argued that there are permanent dialogue tables with teachers in all states, so she assured that she 'does not understand' their protest. The president's words came minutes before a clash between teachers and police guarding the palace, due to their refusal to let them enter the premises. 'What is the need for this protest, especially two days before the right-wing demonstration,' the president said when questioned about the protest that continued outside the presidential residence. She said this after an extensive presentation about the social media accounts promoting next Saturday's march. This Thursday morning, the National Palace was surrounded by CNTE members, who fulfilled their threat to protest. In turn, security forces responded with fire extinguishers and tear gas. Contrary to the president's statements, CNTE protesters claim that dialogue tables have been paused, and they demand their reinstatement. According to Miguel Elorza, in charge of the infodemia section, an analysis detected international accounts linked to right-wing movements that have launched attacks against progressive governments, allocating over 90 million pesos in October and so far this November. In this regard, Sheinbaum stated that 'protests in our country are free, we agree with freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, if young people have demands, I think it's very good that they protest; the issue here is who is promoting the protest'. In this context, she also criticized the teachers' protest. In response, protesters were hitting the fences set up outside the premises, as well as at other points in the Zócalo.
