The Mexico City government announced on Tuesday that the permanent driver's license in Mexico City can be processed throughout the entire year 2026. This was announced at a press conference by the head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, who clarified that this measure was implemented in November 2024 with the aim of “saving time, money, and procedures for citizens.” “Today we have a modern, effective, and deeply citizen-oriented instrument,” highlighted the city's leader. The deadline to apply for the permanent driver's license was set to expire in 2025, meaning citizens had until December 31 to obtain their document; however, with this extension, they can now process it until the end of 2026. Since the start of issuing permanent licenses to date, over 1 million licenses have been issued, a number that “far exceeded the government's initial expectations.” “2025 became the year with the highest number of license issuances in the history of Mexico City.” The application can be made in person at vehicle control and license modules, or also online. Furthermore, the resources obtained from the permanent license procedures will be allocated to a trust fund exclusively for strengthening the city's mobility in three fundamental axes: non-motorized mobility, road safety, and public transportation.
