4T Tries to Regain Ground with Zócalo Rally

Mexico's ruling 4T coalition organizes a major rally in the capital to demonstrate unity and strength following a political crisis sparked by a mayor's murder and youth mobilizations.

4T Tries to Regain Ground with Zócalo Rally

Following the mobilizations of Generation Z and the blows the ruling party took after the murder of Uruapan's mayor, Carlos Manzo, the 'Fourth Transformation' (4T) seeks to regain the agenda and show strength with a rally to be held this Saturday at the Zócalo in the capital. At least three sources present at the meeting reported that the head of government led an internal meeting where she asked figures of the 4T in the capital to abandon internal disputes within the different mayoralties and for all sectors to mobilize with the greatest possible force this Saturday. So far, the organization of the rally at the Zócalo is as planned: coordination between the capital's government and the federal government through Carlos Augusto Morales López, Claudia Sheinbaum's chief of staff, and a special request: to leave the internal disputes within the 4T to create an image of unity and strength around the head of state. AMLO reappears with support for Sheinbaum and a message to the 4T: 'We must not overshadow our president nor divide ourselves.' The plan for this weekend was put into practice in the offices that the capital's government has at the Zócalo. For this reason, Brugada was emphatic in her request to abandon internal infighting and concentrate all efforts on the last major event of the year. A strong mobilization this Saturday, combined with the anticipated departure of the Prosecutor's Office by the future ambassador, Alejandro Gertz Manero, and the almost certain arrival of Ernestina Godoyle in his post, would allow Sheinbaum to generate a strong show of power within the 4T at a crucial moment: the eve of the definitions of the candidacies for the 2027 elections, which will take place next year and will be the great test of the disputes that exist within the ruling coalition. To this end, the ruling party seeks to regain the agenda and show strength—both internally and externally—with the rally to be held at the Zócalo. A poor turnout or a disorganization would increase the questions that have grown in recent days. The fall of Gertz: Sheinbaum believes she has won a battle within the 4T and now defines the future of Bucareli. To this end, the ruling party in CDMX is aware that a large part of the mobilization will pass through its streets, as it is the city where it will be held, and also because historically, the bulk of the participation falls on the capital and the neighboring State of Mexico. For this, sources from the 'morado' party (guinda) anticipated to this editorial that the head of government, Clara Brugada, commands most of the operation for which she demanded to abandon disputes and mobilize with the greatest possible power. During recent weeks, the murder of Carlos Manzo in Michoacán, the violent mobilizations of Generation Z, and a more violent and interventionist tone from Donald Trump have put the 4T in an uncomfortable position. 'They asked us to fill the Zócalo,' a deputy from CDMO assured LPO, who for this Saturday anticipated that they will 'easily exceed 100,000 people' in the streets of the historic center. For this, in recent days, dissemination material has been delivered, such as leaflets that will be distributed in the coming days, and a strong mural has been painted on walls in different neighborhoods. This weekend's mobilization is important for President Claudia Sheinbaum.
