Political Turmoil in Mexico City: Piracy and Staff Changes

Former Governor Raúl Rocha Cantú dodges summonses from Mexico City authorities. Meanwhile, pirated copies of the new book by former President López Obrador are being sold on the city streets. These events are unfolding against a backdrop of personnel changes in the prosecutor's office and the presidential administration.

Political Turmoil in Mexico City: Piracy and Staff Changes

Former governor Raúl Rocha Cantú was summoned for questioning last week not by the Prosecutor's Office, but by the Citizen Security Secretariat headed by Omar García Harfuch, and on two occasions he dodged the summonses. So, if anyone had any doubts that both officials would act in tandem, they should clear that from their minds. The book being sold, we are told, is a pirated version, hence the price of 250 pesos, much cheaper than the original version in established bookstores, which is around 450 pesos. We are pointed to the irony that not even the former head of state is immune from piracy, and that the illegal book is sold meters from the headquarters of the Executive Branch, and worst of all, the royalties from those copies will not reach his bank account. The Prosecutor General's Office reversed its decision to exonerate Raúl Rocha Cantú to make him a 'protected witness' and reactivate the arrest warrant against him. This is a strong move that deals a blow to the new head, Ernestina Godoy, who seems to be desperately trying to sort out the disorder she found. It is interesting to observe how this change of signals was gestated. President Claudia Sheinbaum appointed Esthela Damián Peralta as the legal counsel of the Federal Executive, replacing Ernestina Godoy, the Attorney General of the Republic. And so it is and so it will be. We are informed that on the streets surrounding the National Palace, street vendors are already loudly offering the new book by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador 'Greatness'. She is knowledgeable in parliamentary, fiscal, and human rights law, which reinforces the legal line of the Presidency towards the 2026 structural reforms. Experience that adds to the 4T. Damián, a close collaborator of Sheinbaum, has served as head of the CDMX DIF, executive secretary of Sipinna, and undersecretary of Violence Prevention.
