Sheinbaum Limits Entry of U.S. Military Aircraft to Mexico

Mexico City's Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she has made a decision to limit the entry of U.S. military aircraft into Mexican territory for security training in the neighboring country to the north. This decision was made following the scandal caused by the arrival of a U.S. military Hercules aircraft at Toluca Airport, which raised suspicions amid Donald Trump's requests to participate in the fight against drug trafficking in Mexico. Sheinbaum had to explain that it was not the arrival of U.S. troops nor the transport of weapons, but that the aircraft came to pick up a group of Mexicans who will receive a month of training at the Northern Command. "I have decided that when it comes to training, it is very important that these trainings are approved by the Security Council, but it is better that a Mexican plane goes to the U.S. to drop off those who will take the training than for a U.S. plane to come here. It is a decision that has been made," she said this morning. Sheinbaum ruled out the arrival of U.S. troops in Mexico: "Mexicans went for training." She recalled that on other occasions, U.S. aircraft had come, but they landed on military bases. However, on this occasion, it was the council itself that approved its landing in Toluca without explaining the reason. Nevertheless, she reiterated that no law is being violated and that Senate approval was not required because it is only sought when U.S. military personnel are training on Mexican soil. On the other hand, during her morning press conference, she also stated that the sending of 37 alleged criminals to the United States was a sovereign decision made by Mexican authorities and that there were no conversations with Trump about it.
