SEP Official Accuses Secretary of Corruption Amidst Dispute

Marx Arriaga, a high-ranking official at the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), accused Secretary Mario Delgado of being corrupt, neoliberal, and repressive. For this reason, after calling a press conference, Arriaga stated that he will remain in his position until he receives a document informing him of his dismissal in accordance with current laws. He also claimed that he was evicted from his office, located on Av. Universidad 1200, with the help of two police officers, without providing any arguments or even administrative grounds. In response, the SEP, headed by Mario Delgado, issued a statement saying that 'no eviction has occurred by the authorities against any official of this Secretariat,' and instead, the dependency claims it was an administrative procedure carried out by the Unit of Legal Affairs and the Internal Control Body of the dependency 'of an administrative nature and is carried out with strict compliance with the applicable regulations.' The agency also confirmed that Arriaga's position will be changed as of February 15 to a designation-at-will modality. Marx Arriaga shared videos of the events on his social media and stated that he was not officially informed of this decision, and his position had disappeared from the structure, although this has not been published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which would make the procedure totally irregular. In the videos, Marx Arriaga is seen challenging a police officer, daring them to handcuff him, saying, 'They want to handcuff the one who made the free textbooks, go ahead.' 'We are not clinging to this chair, we are clinging to the principles,' he expressed. This is not the first public confrontation between Mario Delgado and Marx Arriaga. Last December, President Claudia Sheinbaum had to intervene and deny the existence of a 'rebellion' within Morena and the SEP following Arriaga's calls to create committees with obradorista values to prevent the dependency from being captured by people who allegedly seek to privatize education.
