Mexican Prosecutor's Office Hands Over 'El Mencho's' Body to Family

The Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) reported on Saturday that it has handed over the body of Nemesio Oseguera, 'El Mencho,' to his family after exhausting all necessary protocolary procedures, nearly a week after a military operation killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). In a statement, the agency noted that genetic tests were conducted 'to confirm the existence of a blood relationship between the person who requested the delivery and the deceased.' The FGR did not provide further details about the procedure or the location where the remains were kept during the proceedings. The case comes after a Mexican Army operation against the CJNG carried out last weekend, in which 'El Mencho,' one of the most-wanted capos by Mexico and the United States, was killed. The Mexican government has maintained that it was an action with information exchange with the United States, respecting sovereignty, as stated this week by President Claudia Sheinbaum and her Security Cabinet. In parallel, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar GarcĂa Harfuch, stated that authorities are considering up to four possible successors to lead the CJNG, without detailing identities, while monitoring the criminal group's reconfiguration following the death of its main leader.
