A new case of alleged police corruption in Mexico City has sparked outrage on social media after a video was circulated showing security officers allegedly extorting foreign tourists in the Roma Norte neighborhood. The material, shared by journalist Antonio Nieto on platform X, captures the moment two officers intercept a man in public and allegedly demand money in exchange for not arresting him. According to the information, the incident occurred at number 168 on Álvaro Obregón Avenue, where two tourists left a bar with drinks in hand and were approached by sector police. According to the complaint, the officers demanded up to 8,000 pesos to avoid legal proceedings, a sum that was allegedly transferred on the spot. In the video, a man and two uniformed officers are seen partially behind a metal structure, apparently trying to avoid being clearly seen. After the case went public, the Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) reported that the General Directorate of Internal Affairs has already initiated an administrative investigation file to identify the officers involved. They also indicated that they will be summoned to give a statement. The agency reiterated that it will not tolerate acts contrary to its Code of Ethics and assured that any improper conduct, against both Mexican and foreign citizens, will be sanctioned. “All cases of corruption or contrary to regulations will be investigated and sanctioned,” the SSC concluded.
