Mexico City Government Considers Leave Days During World Cup Matches

Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, informed this Monday, March 30, that her administration is considering implementing partial leave days during the World Cup matches in the capital. The objective is to guarantee optimal mobility and security conditions.

During her press conference, the head of government highlighted that these actions aim to reduce pressure on public transport and vehicular traffic, while allowing the population to enjoy the sporting event.

«Leave and remote work for match days?»

Brugada detailed that the capital government has formally requested the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) to suspend classes on the dates of the matches.

The intention, she explained, is for employees to «be able to work from home as was done during the pandemic moments».

These measures have as their central purpose «to avoid greater tensions in traffic».

«THERE WILL BE WORLD CUP LEAVE DAYS IN CDMX»

The capital head of government described the recent match between Mexico and Portugal as «a rehearsal for what's to come, which is the World Cup».

«We have from the beginning requested […] the SEP to issue a definition that classes be suspended on those days,» she stated.

In the labor sphere, it has also been requested to business coordinators to facilitate remote work.

One of the most relevant aspects was the implementation of the «last mile» model, which restricts access to private transport within a one-kilometer radius around the stadium and prioritizes the use of public transport.

Similarly, she reported on advances in infrastructure, such as the remodeling of the Huipulco CETRAM, improvements in pedestrian bridges, repaving of roads, and modernization of the Light Rail.

Finally, Brugada warned that excessive alcohol consumption represents one of the main risks of the event: «For us it is a risk […] where there is alcohol consumption, unfortunately there is violence».
