Massive Protests in Mexico City

Mexico City will experience an intense day of social mobilizations this Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with at least four marches, more than a dozen gatherings, and various protests that could cause traffic disruptions in key areas like Paseo de la Reforma, the Zócalo, and the Historic Center. According to the Citizen Security Secretariat's (SSC) agenda, the contingents will be led by former workers, social collectives, transporters, and civil organizations, whose demands range from labor issues to territory defense and social justice. Workers, police, and transporters lead the marches. Among the most notable mobilizations is the march by former workers of the defunct Route 100, who will gather at Paseo de la Reforma to head to the capital's Zócalo. This group demands a 9% salary increase, better working conditions, and respect for their rights as pensioners. In parallel, members of "La Gran Familia," linked to the transport sector, will march from the Salto del Agua area to the Congress of Mexico City to deliver a petition demanding better working conditions, support against violence, and a reduction in tax burdens. Rejection of gentrification and social demands mark the day. Another march that could cause disruptions is the one called by the Front for the Defense of the Peoples and Neighborhoods of Anáhuac, which will depart from San Antonio Abad station towards the Zócalo. Among them, the protest by the National Front for the 40-Hour Workweek in front of the Senate stands out, where they will demand a reduction in the working day and oppose extended work schemes. There will also be marches by collectives seeking justice for victims, defense of public spaces, student rights, and cannabis regulation. Affected areas and recommendations. Main traffic disruptions are expected in: Paseo de la Reforma, the Zócalo, Central Axis and avenues of the Historic Center, Congress of Mexico City, Monument to the Revolution. Authorities do not rule out intermittent blockades and the incorporation of more contingents throughout the day, so citizens are advised to anticipate travel, use alternative routes, and stay informed through official channels. Their main demand is the pending payment related to their severance pay after the transport system's bankruptcy. This protest is joined by the mobilization of workers and former public security personnel, who will depart from the Monument to the Revolution towards the Zócalo. The protesters reject urban policies that, they claim, favor gentrification and real estate megaprojects. In addition to the marches, at least 12 gatherings are planned at various points in the capital.
