Union warns of critical failures in Mexico City Metro

Union warns of ‘critical failures in the Metro’. Fernando Espino stated that the system is ‘practically collapsed’ and has denounced that for five months, they have exposed the most urgent problems to the Ministry of Finance without receiving a response. The main failures in the Metro of CDMX include: over 7,000 fractured sleepers on Metro Line 1, with a constant risk of derailment; 70% of trains without major maintenance, many with over 2 million kilometers traveled; 30% with partial or incomplete maintenance; 84 trains out of service due to lack of materials; only 68 trains in good condition operating on lines 1 and 12; constant fires on all lines due to lack of basic maintenance supplies. The union leader emphasized that they ‘do not want to take risks’ due to the deterioration of the system and lack of resources, which is why a staggered strike in the Metro was planned. They threaten a staggered strike starting April 15 in the Metro of CDMX. The union leader of the Metro of CDMX also warned that if they do not receive a response from the Mexico City Government, the measures could intensify starting Wednesday, April 15. On that day, in addition to continuing without overtime, ‘dropped arms’ would be added in all technical areas of the Metro, which could further worsen service disruptions until Friday or until the authorities address their demands. ‘Unfortunately, we have not had any response. We, as workers, believe that the Metro is completely collapsed. This would directly affect about 2 million users. Today we have decided not to work overtime, which would affect approximately 2 million people,’ Espino stated. The National Union of the Metro System of CDMX, led by its leader Fernando Espino, warned this Monday, April 13, of service disruptions in the capital's transport after informing that employees will not work overtime TODAY on all lines of the ‘Orange Limousine’. Fernando Espino explained, in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva, that this measure is a response to the ‘lack of attention and sensitivity from the Mexico City authorities’ to the Metro Union's demands. ‘The Metro in its current technical condition does not meet international protocols to continue operating due to the safety of users and workers,’ explained the union leader. According to the Metro leader, the suspension of overtime will cause staggered stoppages throughout the day of Monday, April 13, which will translate into the loss of approximately 800 train runs in the three shifts. ‘The budget is hijacked, absolutely nothing has been purchased,’ Espino concluded.
