Mexico City Metro Union Announces Strike Over Maintenance Issues

The Mexico City Metro union has announced a strike for Wednesday, as authorities are not responding to employee demands. Workers are threatening to stop working overtime and hold a 'stand-down' action until funding and maintenance issues, which have led to a system collapse and safety risks, are resolved.

The National Collective System Union of the Mexico City Metro threatened a strike for next Wednesday, April 15, in case the capital's government does not respond to its demands. Fernando Espino, the Metro union leader, explained that employees plan not to work overtime next Wednesday and to carry out "stand-downs" in all technical areas. This measure would continue until Friday or until the administration of the CDMX government meets the union's demands. For this reason, Espino pointed out that so far they have not received a response to their requests, despite having for five months timely exposed the most urgent problems of the Metro to the capital government, as well as to the Ministry of Finance. "The Metro is practically collapsing. Another 30% has only partial and incomplete maintenance. To this is added that 84 trains are out of service due to lack of materials, while only 68 units are operating in adequate conditions, mainly on lines 1 and 12. Finally, he denounced that there are constant "flashes" on various lines due to the lack of basic supplies for track maintenance, stating that they even lack essential materials such as oakum or uniforms to do their job. For the workers of the CDMX Metro, the capital's transport system "is completely collapsed and the budget is hijacked, absolutely nothing has been bought." This Monday, staggered stoppages are being carried out throughout the Metro's schedule, which will result in the loss of approximately 800 train runs in the three shifts. "The budget is hijacked and absolutely nothing has been bought, even though we have pointed out all the problems," he stated. The Metro union warns that lack of maintenance could cause a derailment on Metro Line 1. The Metro leader warned about risks in operation, including the possibility of a derailment. He indicated that on Line 1 there are more than 7,000 broken sleepers, which represents a constant danger for train circulation. Likewise, he detailed that 70% of the trains have not received major maintenance and many have already traveled more than 2 million kilometers. Plan your time!
